5 things you never knew happened at a nutrition consultation

One of the first questions people ask me when we talk about starting down the path to meeting their health goals is “What happens in a nutrition consultation? ” There’s a certain amount of trepidation which people experience when putting their trust in a health practitioner – I hear you!

There is a whole journey that a person has been on before they even reach out to me for an initial telephone chat. Often that person has already sought out lots of other ideas, they will probably have tried all of the medications and home remedies that they have read about on the internet and more often than not, they are really despondent, they’ve got to their wit’s end, whether it is hormonal problems, weight loss issues, skin issues like eczema or acne or even problems with fertility. The most informed person is always the person with the diagnosis. They know everything about their condition. So for someone to take that step, to make contact with me, it is a HUGE leap of faith and not one I underestimate.

So when you book your appointment with me, you might not expect to fill in a questionnaire about your health. We are so used to turning up to a 10 minute appointment with the GP and having to explain the problem quickly and concisely in order to get their opinion within that short time, that we are not used to going into ALL of the detail. Nutritional therapy is ALL about the detail!

You also might not expect to fill in a food diary for 3 days! Rather unsurprisingly I’m dead keen to know what food is currently going in. Not to judge – but just to understand what nutrients you are getting at the moment, and what are you NOT getting. This is one of the most important pieces of information you will give. Not only does it help me to understand your food intake but also it gives me a little insight into your lifestyle too – are you eating on the hoof because of commitments, do you sit for tea with your family, do you detest fish?! It is all vitally important for me to understand more about YOU.

Nutrition consultations delve into everything about you, from the obvious to the not so obvious, from your sleep, your mental health, even if you dream. All of these things are important clues that I piece together to understand what support your body needs through foods and lifestyle amendments.

In this day and age of fantastic technology, you also don’t need to be seen in person to have a thorough discussion about your health and goals. Whilst I do run a clinic in Weston Super Mare in North Somerset, in the current climate I work exclusively through video conferencing, offering online nutrition appointments to people across the UK. Once the global pandemic is over, both face to face nutrition consultations as well as online will be available.

The last thing that you might not expect from a nutrition consultation is that you get your own cheerleader. When we work together on your health goals I am 100% invested in your results. Far from being “just another client” I prefer to work really closely with you, giving as much support, guidance, reassurance, and information as I can during our time together. It is for that reason that I limit the number of clients I am working with at any one time. I believe that it is only when true focus and investment is placed on health that progress can be made for the long term, not just short term solutions.

I hope that this has served to answer some of the questions you may have had about booking a nutrition consultation with me. If it hasn’t and you would like to learn more or to have a free 30 minute Zoom consultation to see what it is all about, book here https://p.bttr.to/2SZ0f0k
